Many of us in the United States are fortunate to have received a basic education. From Kindergarten to 12th grade, we’ve had the opportunity to learn how to read, write, do mathematics, and speak in foreign languages. This opportunity sets us up for a lifetime of success. In fact, did you know that in the U.S. the average high school graduate earns $8,000 more per year than someone who hasn’t completed high school. That’s significant!
Now imagine you live in a country where the average enrollment rate of children in secondary schools is less than 50% of the eligible population. Then, from that, fewer than 75% of the enrolled population actually completes secondary school. How do you think you’d live? If your thought is, that would be hard, you’re not wrong.
Guatemala is a nation rife with poverty. Currently more than 8% of the population of Guatemala makes less than $1.90 per day.[3] Families living in such poverty are often the families who are unable to support their children attending school. This is because their children are needed at home or are needed to work to help provide for their family so that they can make the minimum necessary to survive. The sad reality is that childhood poverty very often leads to adult poverty. The cycle repeats and repeats until someone is able to have access to more.
This is where you come into play, this is where you can actually make a difference! You can stem the tide of poverty and end the cycle. If you were to embark on a GHT service tour, you’d be able to see first-hand the struggle that people in poverty in Guatemala face each day. You’d see how hard it is for them to find food, to cook food, and to simply just survive. GHT service tours provide you with a glimpse of what life might be like for someone who doesn’t have any of the so-called “necessities” of life. In truth, participating in a GHT service tour will enable you to see the world through a lens that can only be viewed through experience.
Not only will a GHT service tour provide you with an education of a lifetime, in only a week, but it will give you the opportunity to share yourself and your experiences with individuals struggling on a daily basis. Our service tours are designed to enable you to teach and share experiences with the people in Guatemala. These experiences allow those struggling in Guatemala to see that there is possibility, that the world isn’t just doom and gloom.
Moreover, the mission of GHT isn’t just to provide individuals with the trip of a lifetime, but we also provide individuals the opportunity to directly stop the impact of the cycle of poverty by providing educational sponsorships to children in Guatemala. By enrolling in an education sponsorship, your monthly contribution will go directly towards the education of a child in Guatemala. Through your efforts, you can put a child through elementary and secondary school and give them a realistic chance to change their future and their fortunes. $30 a month is a small price to pay when seeing the fortunes of not just one, but generations of people change in miraculous ways.
So, what does $30 a month do in an education sponsorship? It provides everything a child needs to get a great education. With your monthly sponsorship you provide a child with all of the school supplies needed to receive a quality education. You give them access to the internet, to pencils and to paper. You enable them to attend quality institutions that will set them up on a trajectory that will change their circumstances for generations to come. In fact, through GHT efforts, we’ve seen children go on to become doctors who come back to provide support for the communities they’ve left.
Come and experience changing a life. With GHT you can do this through participation in our service tours or with a simple monthly sponsorship. You have the ability to shape the future for generations to come and change someone’s stars.
